A review reveals where to act.
The review covered 38 initial meetings held during an IT campaign. Transcripts were available for 28 meetings, with sales feedback for ten more. The review dated 13 October 2026 examines the data as of 7 October 2026. Companies, vendors, customers and the people involved have been anonymised for this article.
We brought together the conversation content, documented feedback and identifiable next steps. We focused on three questions: What need is actually evident? How firm is the customer's commitment? And which specific task will move the discussion forward?
The analysis identified four early sales opportunities, twelve further prospects and additional internal introductions to specialist departments. Each of these stages of maturity calls for an appropriate next step.
Five ways to develop opportunities further.
Clarify needs before presenting.
First understand which solution is in place, where a specific challenge arises and how much priority the topic has. Sales establishes needs and responsibilities. Presales assesses the customer's architecture, then explores the relevant technical points in greater depth.
Address outstanding requirements specifically.
Budget, business value, technical integration and data processing shape the decision to explore a solution further. A general follow-up becomes a specific task: provide the right information, assess a limited pilot or prepare a scoping session.
Actively build internal connections.
A relevant specialist contact can open the door to other stakeholders. Record the role you need to reach and the reason for the introduction. The next discussion connects the technical perspective with the appropriate decision-making responsibility.
Agree the next step together.
A follow-up reminder, general interest in a conversation and a confirmed specialist meeting represent different sales stages. A reliable next step specifies the objective, participants, owner and a concrete agreement with the customer.
Manage progress transparently.
Assign every outstanding task an owner and a deadline. Document the customer's commitment, meeting type and next task separately in the feedback. Recording the author, date and changes makes the status traceable. Examples from conversations then provide the basis for targeted coaching.
Turn insights into an action plan.
The proposed action plan prioritised the early opportunities first. In parallel, the remaining contacts were to receive an updated status and a clearly assigned owner. The proposal allowed two working days to clarify status and feedback internally, and five working days from approval for priority deliverables.
These deadlines apply to the work of the sales organisation. Specialist meetings and further project steps follow the actual agreement with the customer. The next review checks which information was delivered, how the customer responded and what follows from that response.
The central management question is: who owns which task, by when — and how will we recognise progress with the customer?
Develop opportunities to close, systematically.
The documented outcome of this analysis is a prioritised action and coaching plan. At the reporting date, any subsequent increase in the closing rate remained to be established. Measuring impact requires tracking the further development of the opportunities and the results actually achieved.
This suggests a clear approach for daily work: refine the need, answer outstanding questions, bring the right stakeholders together and secure a firm commitment to the next step. A realistic assessment of maturity helps sales decide where to invest its time.
